The The Needlemakers is a place where history, creativity, and independent spirit come together.
The site’s story begins around 1820, when Broad’s candle factory was built. For nearly a century, it produced candles for the local community before finally closing in 1908, when its last box of candles was donated to Lewes Museum. Over the years, the buildings found new life as a surgical needle factory, a potter’s store, and a builder’s merchants, before facing the threat of demolition in the 1970s. Thankfully, they were preserved and reimagined into the vibrant destination you see today.
Now, The Needlemakers is home to a carefully curated collection of independent shops and makers. Every business here is chosen for its quality, originality, and character, creating a unique shopping experience you won’t find anywhere else.
Whether you’re searching for something special or simply exploring, there’s truly something for everyone. Take your time to wander from shop to shop, discover handcrafted goods, and soak up the calm, welcoming atmosphere—you may find yourself happily losing a few hours here.
