The Needlemakers has now become a well-loved destination in Lewes for local and visitors with its useful variety of shops, a fabulous café/restaurant and bar, a trendy gym and a stylish hairdresser all under one roof.
The site’s story begins around 1820, when Broad’s candle factory was built. For nearly a century, it produced candles for the local community before finally closing in 1908, when its last box of candles was donated to Lewes Museum. Over the years, the buildings found new life as a surgical needle factory, a potter’s store, and a builder’s merchants, before facing the threat of demolition in the 1970s. Thankfully, they were preserved and reimagined into the vibrant destination you see today.
Now, The Needlemakers is home to a carefully curated collection of independent shops and makers. Every business here is chosen for its quality, originality, and character, creating a unique shopping experience you won’t find anywhere else.
